Tyler & Tyler go to Florida

I've been meaning to write about Tyler's freelance gig in Florida for some time now.  Over the summer my Tyler and Tyler Lancaster spent a month in Florida animating for the Disney on Ice production of Toy Story 3.  They animated the rocket from pizza planet and other TS3 things that are projected onto the ice during the show.

It was crazy.  He got the call one afternoon and they basically said to him Can you be in Florida tomorrow?  So we quick packed up his suitcase with lots of t-shirts, shorts, even a pair of swim trunks since hey, it's FL in August.  Only to find out later that they would be animating day & night at the rink right next to the ice.  Where it's freezing!  For me it was a reallly long month with Tyler gone, but a great animation opportunity for him.  And CCAD just did a super nice post about their freelance gig...read it here!

Third Eye

Last night Tyler & I went to the opening reception of Third Eye, a photography based exhibition at the OSU Urban Arts Space downtown.  The show was curated by two CCAD students and included work by our friend Pei-Yin Chen!  It was so refreshing to see friends from school and be around great art and great artists.  Third Eye is up until February 11, 2011.

Super cute Pei & Greg with images from her elegant Contact series

Winter Music

Despite the snow and the cold it feels so good to be back home in my cozy Ohio apartment. By the time March rolls around, all that winter is good for is listening to Bon Iver. I especially love his acoustic version of For Emma, Forever Ago from the Take Away concert series. Gives me chills it's so lovely!

We Went to Pixar!

Thursday we woke up and there was excitement in the air!  After a quick breakfast at the ihop in Emeryville we drove up to the Pixar gates and got our visitor badges.  Which had our names followed by A Stranger from the Outside!  We met up with Mike Altman, a CCAD grad and modeler at Pixar who kind enough to show us around.  The hallways at Pixar are covered in concept art for their movies, all framed and beautifully presented.  Even the most simple sketch of Bonnie from TS3 reinforces the fact that the folks at Pixar are world class artists and animators.  It was like a playground for artists!  There were larger than life sculptures of The Incredibles and Bruce the shark from Nemo, a cereal bar, the Luxo Cafe, and a huge theater screening room.

I bought Tyler a Pixar coffee mug in the gift shop so that he can use it in the morning while he animates.  Right outside the gift shop Mike said there's JL.  Sure enough, there was John Lasseter the CCO of Pixar & Disney in his signature colorful print shirt, and it just happened to be his birthday!  We spotted Pete Doctor, the Director of Monster's Inc. & UP eating lunch with some animators whom Tyler could tell you all about.  And we ran into Aaron Hartline who animated on UP & Toy Story 3. We got to take pictures right inside of the atrium with Mike & Sully from Monster's Inc.  Both of the Tylers were so excited to be there, they were like little kids in a candy store!  I have no doubt that they will both be working at Pixar someday!

After Pixar we went exploring and ended up crossing the Bay Bridge into San Francisco.  From the car we could look out across the bay and see the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island (we all cracked up when Tyler accidentally called it Azkaban).  SF is a very interesting and very busy city.  We walked around for a few hours and ended up in the SFMOMA gift shop where I added to my fine art postcard collection.  It would take a few days to see the sights, hopefully we'll be back someday!

To Berkeley & Back

On Wednesday we made the 6 hour drive from L.A. up to Berkeley with our friend Tyler Lancaster.  I regret not taking a picture of the Tylers in their accidentally matching gray tshirt, jeans, and aviators getup.  Both Tylers are animators and were beyond excited to be visiting Pixar in Emeryville, right next to Berkeley.

We all stayed with my cousin, Aly, her husband Chris, and their beautiful baby Leo!  This was my first time meeting Leo and he smiled at me as soon as we were introduced.  I'm pretty sure I'm his great-cousin.

Leo's favorite book is Brown Bear, Brown Bear.

We drove through the mountains, then spent hours driving up the flat stretch of the5. We passed a ginormous smelly cow farm (probably a million cows), wind farms, and lots of citrus groves.  One orchard had signs that read Oranges, Mandarins, Lemons too, Eat more Citrus, It's good for you!

Madame Tussaud's

We spent the evening in Hollywood at Madame Tussaud's wax museum.  Generally speaking wax museum's freak me out after a bad experience in a dark room full of wax horror film characters in Canada.  But Madame Tussaud's is the best.  Some of the stars look so real and exact that they might move if you wait long enough.

Will Smith with the biggest Will Smith fan ever.  Tyler is always rapping Will Smith songs in the car.  They are best friends now.

Me and Harry Bailey.  He was much taller than I expected.  Below, Tyler and his new girlfriend Raquel.

That's me & my boyfriend Elton.  The Tyler/Jackie Chan picture is my favorite pic from our visit to Madame Tussaud's.  Every time I see it I laugh so hard!

We had an awesome time running around taking photos with faux celebrities.  And when Tyler turned a corner and saw Jim Carrey standing there, he started giggling!  Great day.
